Galveston sits on a barrier island 50 miles southeast of Houston, with 32 miles of Gulf Coast shoreline and a Victorian-era historic district behind the seawall. The two anchors are Galveston Island itself — beach, the Strand District, and the Pleasure Pier — and Moody Gardens, a 242-acre resort complex where three 10-story glass pyramids house an aquarium, a rainforest, and a discovery museum. Both are reachable from Houston in under an hour and together fill a strong day trip or overnight.

Galveston Island Must-see

Galveston County · Galveston
The island stretches 32 miles along the Gulf of Mexico, with Seawall Boulevard running parallel to the beach for 10 miles. Stewart Beach at the east end and East Beach (the only alcohol-permitted beach on the island) both have parking, restrooms, and concessions — day passes run $10–$15 per car. The 1,130-foot Pleasure Pier juts into the Gulf with 16 rides; a day wristband costs around $25. The historic Strand District, three blocks inland, has 19th-century iron-front buildings housing restaurants, galleries, and the Texas Seaport Museum, home to the 1877 full-rigged tall ship Elissa. The Strand is walkable and free to explore.

Moody Gardens Must-see

Galveston County · Galveston
Moody Gardens is a 242-acre complex on the island's western end built around three 10-story glass pyramids. The Aquarium Pyramid holds 1.5 million gallons of water across Atlantic, Pacific, Caribbean, and Penguin exhibits. The Rainforest Pyramid replicates four ecosystems across 1.5 acres with free-flight birds, butterflies, and live crocodiles. The Discovery Pyramid houses rotating science exhibits and an IMAX theater. An all-day pass covering all three pyramids costs around $65 for adults; individual pyramid tickets run $20–$30 each. Buy tickets online before arriving — the all-day pass sells out on summer and holiday weekends.
Planning Notes
Where to stay: Seawall Boulevard hotels put you steps from the beach and within walking distance of the Pleasure Pier. The Moody Gardens Hotel is the only resort on the island's west end — convenient if the complex is your primary reason for the trip. Mid-island vacation rentals are cheaper and give car access to both areas.
Book ahead: Moody Gardens all-day passes sell out on summer and holiday weekends — buy online before leaving Houston. The Pleasure Pier is walk-up on most days but gets crowded on summer Saturday afternoons. Restaurants along the Strand fill up on weekends; reserve dinner the day before.
Getting around: A car is required — the island is 32 miles long and the main attractions span several miles of Seawall Boulevard. Parking at Stewart Beach and East Beach costs $10–$15. From Houston, I-45 South is the direct route; expect traffic on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons.
