Gatlinburg
Gatlinburg is the northern gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park — the park entrance is at the south end of the main street. Most visitors split a day between the town and the park.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park Must-see

Sevier County · Gatlinburg · Free
Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most-visited national park in the United States (13 million visits in 2023) and has no entrance fee. The park spans 522,427 acres across Tennessee and North Carolina; the Gatlinburg entrance gives access to Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, Alum Cave Trail, and the Sugarlands Visitor Center. Elevations range from 875 to 6,643 feet; the park holds the largest old-growth hardwood forest east of the Mississippi, 30 salamander species, and 1,500 plant species. Parking reservations are required May–October at the most popular trailheads ($2 per reservation via recreation.gov); arrive before 9 AM on summer weekends.
Clingmans Dome Must-see

Sevier County · Gatlinburg · Free
Clingmans Dome is the highest point in the Smokies at 6,643 feet and the highest point on the Appalachian Trail. From Newfound Gap (on US-441 from Gatlinburg), Clingmans Dome Road climbs 7 miles to the summit parking area. A paved half-mile trail ascends 330 feet to a concrete observation tower with 360-degree views. On clear days the view extends 100 miles; the characteristic Smoky Mountains haze — water vapor from the dense forest — softens the horizon on humid summer days. No additional fee. The road closes December through March.
Gatlinburg Strip Must-see

Sevier County · Gatlinburg · Free
The Gatlinburg Strip is the mile-long main street (US-441) running from the town's north traffic lights to the national park entrance at the south. Free to walk, with candy shops, pancake houses, and mountain craft galleries. Ole Smoky Moonshine at the south end offers free tastings; Anakeesta, a mountaintop village accessible by gondola, is a paid attraction accessible from mid-strip. Most visitors spend 2–3 hours on the Strip between arriving and heading toward Pigeon Forge or the park. Busiest July through October.
Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine (Gatlinburg) Must-see

Sevier County · Gatlinburg · Free (tastings)
Ole Smoky is the first federally licensed moonshine distillery in Tennessee, opened in 2010 when the state legalized craft distilling. The tasting room at the south end of the Gatlinburg Strip offers free samples of 30+ flavors in mason jars — from unflavored white corn whiskey to Apple Pie, Peach, and Mango Habanero. A live band plays on the outdoor porch most evenings. The experience is free; bottles run $20–30. Two blocks from the national park entrance.
Pigeon Forge
Pigeon Forge is 6 miles north of Gatlinburg on the Parkway — more commercial, centered on Dollywood and a dense strip of dinner theaters and outlet shopping.
Dollywood Must-see

Sevier County · Pigeon Forge · ~$90–110 (single day)
Dollywood opened in 1986 as a partnership between Dolly Parton and the owners of Silver Dollar City Pigeon Forge. The 160-acre park sits at 1,400 feet elevation with 50+ rides — including the 73-mph Lightning Rod launch coaster — plus Appalachian craft demonstrators (blacksmithing, glassblowing, woodcarving), Southern food vendors, and live performances across multiple stages. It has won the Applause Award, the theme park industry's top honor, 10 times. Christmas on the Square (Netflix, 2020) drew renewed attention to the park's Smoky Mountain Christmas festival, which runs mid-November through January. Single-day tickets run $90–110; the park is open mid-March through early January.
Comedy Barn Theater (Pigeon Forge) Worth the detour

Sevier County · Pigeon Forge · ~$35–40
The Comedy Barn is a 1,000-seat theater on the Parkway that has run the same format since 1994: 2 hours of clean family comedy with juggling, magic, ventriloquism, and standup — no profanity, all ages. It's consistently ranked among the top live comedy venues in the Southeast. Tickets run $35–40; shows run nightly with matinees in peak season. The barn is walkable from most Pigeon Forge Parkway accommodations and a 10-minute walk from Dollywood's main gate.

Chattanooga
Chattanooga is 90 miles south of Gatlinburg at the end of the Smoky Mountains corridor — the Tennessee River narrows here between Lookout Mountain and Signal Mountain, creating a natural gathering point with 10,000 years of continuous human habitation.
Ruby Falls Must-see

Hamilton County · Chattanooga · ~$30
Ruby Falls is a 145-foot waterfall inside Lookout Mountain, reached by a 1,120-foot elevator descent into the cave system. Leo Lambert discovered it while drilling an elevator shaft in 1928 and named it after his wife. The 1-hour guided cave tour travels a half-mile through formations before arriving at the waterfall, lit in the cave chamber. It's the most-visited cave waterfall in the United States. Tickets run about $30 and sell out on peak summer and fall weekends — book in advance. Ruby Falls is 3 miles from downtown Chattanooga; combine it with the Incline Railway for a full Lookout Mountain half-day.
Lookout Mountain Incline Railway Worth the detour

Hamilton County · Chattanooga · ~$16 roundtrip
The Incline Railway has run from the base of Lookout Mountain to the 2,389-foot summit since 1895 — a 1-mile track with a 72.7% grade at the top, the steepest passenger railway in the world. The summit has views of 7 states on clear days and Point Park, a Civil War battlefield unit of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. Round-trip tickets are about $16; Point Park charges an additional $3. Ruby Falls is 3 miles from the Incline base station — plan both in the same afternoon.
Tennessee Aquarium Must-see

Hamilton County · Chattanooga · ~$35
The Tennessee Aquarium opened in 1992 on Ross's Landing directly on the Tennessee River and sparked the redevelopment of the entire downtown riverfront. Two buildings — River Journey and Ocean Journey — hold 12,000+ animals across freshwater and saltwater ecosystems. River Journey traces a river from Appalachian mountain streams to the Gulf; Ocean Journey covers coral reefs, sea turtles, and sharks. The plaza outside is free with river views; the walking bridge connecting downtown to the North Shore crosses directly behind the aquarium. Admission runs about $35 for adults.
Planning Notes
Driving the corridor: Gatlinburg to Pigeon Forge: 6 miles, 15–30 minutes on the Parkway (longer in summer). Pigeon Forge to Chattanooga: 90 miles, about 1 hour 45 minutes on US-441 south through the national park to I-75 south. The most efficient order is Smokies first (Gatlinburg → Clingmans Dome → back to town), then Pigeon Forge (Dollywood), then south to Chattanooga (Lookout Mountain → Ruby Falls → Aquarium). A seasonal trolley connects Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge for $3 but a car is required for the rest of the route.
